"I wholeheartedly welcome the statement of President İlham Aliyev"

President Ersin Tatar issued a written statement where he "wholeheartedly welcomed the statement of President Ilham Aliyev" for his support to the TRNC and the Turkish Cypriot People.

President Aliyev participated in the international forum titled "Facing the New World Order" held at ADA University in Baku on Wednesday, where he made the statement in response to a question by Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Işıksal, Special Advisor on International Relations and Diplomacy of the President.

President Aliyev, who addressed the event that was attended by more than 80 experts from 44 different countries, stated that the Turkish Cypriot People "deserve to have their own State" due to the historical developments on the Island, and pledged support for the recognition of the republic by the international community.

President Aliyev also stated that it was the Turkish Cypriot People who voted "yes" to the UN Comprehensive Settlement Plan (Annan Plan), while the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus voted against it in the separately held simultaneous referenda in April 2004. President Aliyev stated that following the support of the Turkish Cypriots for a settlement, the EU accepted the Greek Cypriot Administration as a member.
"Was this fair? No. Was this a clear example of double standards? Yes," President Aliyev said, adding: "Our brothers and sisters can be sure that. . . as far as Azerbaijan is concerned, we will always be by their side to the end... until their recognition by the international community."

President Tatar said: "I wholeheartedly welcome the statement by President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. I would like to thank President Aliyev for this strong support to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. We are happy that our unity of hearts, values and our relationship as an inseparable part of the same nation with Azerbaijan are gradually increasing. I would like to express my gratitude to President Aliyev again for his statements and my wish is that our brotherhood and cooperation will continue forever.”
