Special Representative of the President M. Ergün Olgun meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Director of the European External Action Service, Ambassador Enrique Mora

Special Representative of the President M. Ergün Olgun held a meeting with the Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Director of the European External Action Service, Ambassador Enrique Mora.

During the meeting, Mr Olgun stated that anew formal negotiation process for a solution to the Cyprus issue can be started only when there is a reaffirmation of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot side, which is an inherent right.

Emphasising the need for the EU to contribute both to a settlement of the Cyprus issue and to stability, security and cooperation in the eastern Mediterranean, Mr Olgun pointed out the expectation of the Turkish Cypriot side.  He said there is a need for the bloc to follow a policy that respects the inherent rights of the two sides and to abandon its position of defending the hegemonic mentality adopted by the Greek Cypriot side.

Underlining that the EU is not in a position to impose or dictate the terms of a settlement, Mr Olgun added that this is only possible through freely reached and mutually acceptable negotiations for a solution.   He added that the Greek Cypriots are stepping up armament activities which carries the potential risk of causing crisis both on the island and the region, which poses a threat to the security of our People, adding that the necessary preventative measures will be taken.

Mr Olgun also referred to the six cooperation proposals conveyed by President Ersin Tatar to the Greek Cypriot side via the UN Secretary-General on July 1 and 8, 2022. Stating that it is obvious that the said proposals will contribute to peace and stability to both sides in the island of Cyprus and the region, he invited the EU to encourage the Greek Cypriot side to implement these proposals.

Alongside Mr Olgun, Confidence Building Measures and Bilateral Technical Committees Coordinator Güneş Onar and TRNC Washington Representative Office Third Secretary Denil Ertuğ Akın were present in the meeting.
