“The real solution to the long-standing traffic congestion problem, which continues to cause difficulties for commuters from both sides, is to open another vehicle crossing point in Lefkoşa.”

President Tufan Erhürman visited the Metehan Crossing Point on Wednesday to inspect the ongoing traffic congestion and emphasised that the only lasting solution to the problem — which continues to create daily challenges for commuters on both sides of the island — is the opening of an additional vehicle crossing in Lefkoşa.

During his visit, President Erhürman listened to the concerns of commuters and noted that his purpose was to observe first-hand the difficulties being experienced at Metehan.

“A new vehicle crossing in Lefkoşa should be opened to ease the long-standing congestion that occurs daily at Metehan, which remains the city’s only vehicle crossing,” he said. “If additional booths and personnel are allocated on the Greek Cypriot side, the level of congestion here will also decrease.”
The President explained that the processing time for vehicles crossing into South Cyprus currently varies between five seconds and three minutes, stressing that the technical causes of these delays must be addressed.

President Erhürman noted that infrastructure work at Metehan is expected to start in December, coinciding with the busiest period for crossings. He added that discussions with the United Nations have already begun to arrange special measures to prevent disruptions during that period.

President Erhürman reaffirmed that the most effective and permanent way to ease congestion is to open at least one additional new vehicle crossing in Lefkoşa, and underlined that efforts toward this goal will continue.
