President Tufan Erhürman on Sunday attended a ceremony held in front of the Martyrs’ Monument in Lefkoşa to mark the 21–25 December National Struggle and Martyrs’ Week.
The ceremony commenced with the laying of wreaths at the monument, followed by an observed moment of silence and the raising of the flags, accompanied by the National Anthem.
President Erhürman then signed the Monument’s Book of Remembrance.
In his message, President Erhürman wrote the following:
“Revered Martyrs,
By making the ultimate sacrifice to protect the existence and dignity of the Turkish Cypriot people, you have eternally inscribed your names in the history of these lands.
We did not make such profound sacrifices, nor endure such hardship and loss, for a future condemned to uncertainty.
This great struggle rightfully deserves a future in which safety, equality and dignity prevail.
The people who today stand strong thanks to the sacrifices of our martyrs and veterans bear a profound responsibility to leave hopeful and peaceful tomorrows to their children.
We owe both our children, and the martyrs and veterans who carried this struggle, a fairer, safer and more humane future.
Our aim is to ensure that such suffering is never again experienced on these lands, and that no child is ever deprived of a future.
With these sentiments, I bow with deep respect before your sacred memory, and commemorate you with gratitude, mercy and eternal appreciation.
