President Ersin Tatar issued a message on the 89th anniversary of December 5, 1934, when Turkish women were granted the right to vote and to be elected.

In his message, President Tatar said “The amendment made to the Constitution and the Election Law, enabled the women to vote and become candidates. This revolution, made under the leadership of the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, rendered women stronger in social life and a historic step was taken towards the modernization of Turkish society.”

"On such meaningful days, which are an important opportunity to take concrete and sustainable steps on how the efforts made to increase the active participation of our women, from politics to economy, from culture and art to all decision-making mechanisms, can be taken much further, from the years of social struggle to the declaration of our sovereign state and today. It is a historical responsibility to remember and remind the undeniable contribution of our women in this process.

I will do my utmost within the framework of the authority given to me by the Constitution to take steps to prevent all kinds of physical, psychological violence and harassment actions against women, to increase the number of women's shelters where women who are victims of violence will feel safe, and to find comprehensive solutions to all the problems they face, especially violence.

I respectfully commemorate our Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who set an example to the whole world with the significant step he took by giving Turkish women the right to vote and be elected 89 years ago today, and I congratulate all our women on December 5, International Women's Rights Day."
