President Ersin Tatar participated in the event of the placement of bird nests at the Geçitköy Dam, which have been painted by children who are being treated at the Oncology Hospital and children of the Social Services Department, with the contributions of the Lefkoşa Central Lions Club.

The event was organised with the cooperation of the Northern Cyprus Foundation for the Protection of Environment and Cultural Heritage and the Forestry Department.

Forty-five of the 50 bird nests from the “Life and Home by Child’s Hands” exhibition were placed and saplings were planted in the area of Geçitköy Dam this morning, with the event held within the framework of the Tree and Forest Week and the “Plant an Olive Sapling and Have a Bird’s Nest” campaign.

The President expressed his appreciation for the work carried out on behalf of the TRNC under the leadership of the Northern Cyprus Environment and Cultural Heritage Protection Foundation and he thanked those who contributed.

Referring to the “Project of the Century” – the project which pipes an annual 75 million m3 of fresh water from the Taurus Mountains to the Geçitköy Dam in TRNC via an 80km undersea pipeline, President Tatar said: “Fresh water is being piped to our Geçitköy dam since 2015, except for a short interruption. It is pleasing that such an activity takes place in such a fertile place where Anatolian water meets our land and I am happy to be a part of this activity,” he added.

President Ersin Tatar, who also participated in the planting of tree saplings, nailed the nameplate on behalf of his wife Sibel Tatar on the bird’s nest painted by two-year-old Mustafa.
