President Ersin Tatar: “I wholeheartedly welcome the significant development in Türkiye’s target to achieve energy independence, after laying the first pipes that will transport Black Sea natural gas onshore”

President Ersin Tatar has saluted the “significant step” taken by the Republic of Türkiye in her aim to achieve energy independence, after the first pipes that will transport Black Sea natural gas onshore were laid.

The President commended the leadership of Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the determination of Türkiye to make use of the “biggest natural gas discovery in the Black Sea”, where an initial 10 million m³/day of the natural gas will be extracted in the first phase to the national grid of the Republic of Türkiye by 2023.

President Tatar, who pointed to the Sakarya Gas Field and the “mass benefits” this will yield to Motherland Türkiye, said peak production is expected to be reached by 2026.

“I wish for this significant development to bring with it beneficial outcomes to Türkiye and to all of humanity,” the President said.

President Ersin Tatar’s statement:

“I welcome the important stage in Turkiye’s energy independence target which has been launched by laying of underwater pipes, that will transport Black Sea natural gas onshore.

On behalf of my own name and my people, I congratulate President of the Republic of Türkiye, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and all of Türkiye on the occasion of the first laying and connection of the gas pipeline section in Filyos.  I wish that the Black Sea gas, the biggest natural gas discovery of the Republic of Türkiye that will be transported onshore, will bring beneficial outcomes to Türkiye and to all of humanity.

While reiterating the importance for the Turkish Cypriot people of the fact that the Republic of Türkiye, which is the most powerful country in the eastern Mediterranean, continues to grow stronger and continues to take important strides in innovative technological advances and energy independency as each day passes, I would like to emphasise that the unilateral steps taken by the Greek Cypriot leadership regarding the natural resources around the island of Cyprus is causing tension.

It is inevitable that the support given to the Greek Cypriot side's unilateral activities that increase the prevalent tensions in our region will not only eliminate the efforts to build confidence and cooperation between the two Sides in the island of Cyprus, but also cause additional problems in our region.

While I hope that natural resources will be a tool for achieving regional cooperation rather than being used as a source that causes tension and conflict, I would like to draw attention to the "Eastern Mediterranean Conference" proposal put forward by the President of the Republic of Türkiye, Mr Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which is aimed at establishing prosperity and stability in our region.

I would like to reiterate once again, that this conference, where the Turkish Cypriot Side and Greek Cypriot Side will have equal status, will also have the participation of other countries and interested parties, and is a great opportunity to establish the necessary cooperation.”
