President Ersin Tatar holds video call with Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, a Turkish scientist who was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2015

President Ersin Tatar has held a video call with Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, who was in 2015 awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Mr Sancar, who was visited by Prof. Dr. Nedime Serakıncı, Health Consultant to the President whom Mr Sancar refers to sentimentally as his daughter, thanked the President for the video call and expressed support to him.

President Tatar told Mr Sancar that the TRNC was accepted as an observer member of the Organisation of Turkic States under its constitutional name, adding: “The Turkish Cypriot People have endured years of injustice, deprived of their basic human rights,  despite being the side that has put forward sincere efforts for an equality-based settlement. Negotiations under the federal basis have failed to produce a settlement time and again for more than half-a-century because of the refusal of the Greek Cypriot side to share the governance and resources of the Island of Cyprus on the basis of equality with the Turkish Cypriot People.  Therefore, the Turkish Cypriot People have said it is time to open a new page and to stop insisting on conducting negotiations on the exhausted basis. We are saying it is time to look forward to a realistic and sustainable settlement on the basis of two States and our sovereign equality and equal international status.”
Stating that the  “EU preferred to accept the Greek Cypriot Side as a member in violation of its own accession criteria for political interests,” President Tatar said: “The Greek Cypriot People, who voted against the Annan Plan in 2004, acceded as a member to the bloc a week-later, and is utilising EU mechanisms for the purposes of deepening the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot People through acts of intimidation and exercising veto rights. . .whilst the promises made by the international community including the EU to start direct flights, direct trade and direct contacts, have not been honoured. This situation is depriving our people from the enjoyment of their basic human rights. The EU is not helping the situation through one-sided reports which tow the viewpoint of Greece and the Greek Cypriot Side, which is victimising the Turkish Cypriot People.”

In reference to the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), President Tatar stated:  “The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was unanimously accepted as an observer member to the OTS at the summit in Samarakand.  However, the Turkish Cypriot People cannot be represented in our sister country, Hungary. The reason for this is due to the pro-Greek policy of the EU – which has lost all credibility and ability to take a positive role in the Cyprus issue.”

President Tatar stated that some member states of the OTS have opened or accredited embassies to the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus. “This is the outcome of the pressure from the EU,” he said.

“Despite all these injustices, we will continue on our path without giving up for the acceptance of a realistic and sustainable two State settlement.”

President Tatar thanked Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar, saying: “Your presence and being our voice gives us strength.”

Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar stated that he will be participating in the informal summit of the OTS to be held in Budapest later this month, adding that he will convey the message of President Tatar to the representatives of member states during his contacts and meetings there.
