President Ersin Tatar has expressed his gratitude to everybody and all emergency units as well as to Türkiye, Greek Cypriot Side, SBA and to Israel, for providing air support in the face of a ravaging fire that is believed to have gutted 12,000 dönüms of forest land.

The President made the remarks after he headed back to the fire-affected region in Mersinlik-Kantara. The fire has entered its third day despite intensive efforts to extinguish the flames.

President Tatar, responding to criticism, said: “It is a shame that some are choosing to make cruel and unnecessary criticism with regards to what is being lived in the region. We are putting forward an extraordinary effort and doing everything possible to extinguish the fire. We have managed to secure five firefighting helicopters and six aircraft."

The President said it was a shame for criticism to be made of the ongoing intensive effort and studies to extinguish the fire, adding: “We have thankfully managed to secure air support from Motherland Türkiye, Greek Cypriot Side, SBA and Israel. Five firefighting helicopters and six aircraft participated in the efforts, and everybody is doing their upmost best. It is unfortunate that there have been strong winds which has not helped the situation.”

The President, expressing his hope that the winds will ease by the morning, said: “At present, there are strong winds fanning the fire. Efforts to extinguish the fire will resume as from the early hours of the morning. However, nobody should place blame on anyone else. The spread of the fire to the villages has been prevented. Everyone is putting forward an intensive effort to bring the fire under control.”
