President Ersin Tatar evaluates the attacks on Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who attended the opening of the Türkevi (Turkish House) in New York; “The bigotry of the Greek-Greek leadership continues”

President Ersin Tatar evaluated the attacks by the Greek-Greek Cypriot leadership against the Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who attended the inauguration ceremony of the Türkevi (Turkish House) inNew York.

President Tatar's statement is as follows;

“We regret the reaction and the heinous attacks on Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who attended the inauguration ceremony of Türkevi on Monday, September 20, in New York.

While the ceremony was attended by representatives of the two biggest Monotheistic religions and by many world leaders as well as the UN Secretary General, upon the invitation of the President of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, as an applaudable act for world peace, it is an eye opener that the Greek-Greek Cypriot duo reacted to this event by cancelling a planned meeting between the Archbishop and the Greek and Greek Cypriot leaders.

Such stances made for political reasons indicate the level of bigotry and intolerance of the Greek Cypriot and Greek sides. In such a period when efforts are being made to reach a settlement in Cyprus, such behaviours will only serve to deepen the mistrust between the two peoples and have a detrimental impact on the efforts. We condemn such unacceptable behaviours and hope that the international community will take the necessary lesson.”
