President Ersin Tatar has expressed concern on the increase in the number of thalassaemia cases in the TRNC and has drawn attention on the need to raise awareness about the disease.
 
The President made the remarks whilst addressing a workshop titled “Thalassaemia: The Forgotten Inherited Genetic!”, that was organised jointly by the Cyprus Turkish Society of Human and Clinical Genetics and the Thalassemia Association.
 
The event, which was held at the Near East University İrfan Günsel Congress and Exhibition Hall, was also attended by medical officials, academicians, students as well as civil organisation representatives.
 
President Tatar drew attention to the “increase in thalassaemia cases in the TRNC,” adding that “despite the total eradication of thalassaemia due to legal regulations and intensive preventative measures, the disease has once again re-emerged in the TRNC and is on the rise.
 
President Ersin Tatar said that they were following with concern the increase of thalassemia cases and thanked those who are contributing to the fight against the disease.   Pointing out that there have also been changes to social conditions in the country, President Tatar added that one way of effectively fighting the disease can be to introduce a legal obligation that requires unmarried couples to undertake the appropriate medical test prior to having children, as is also required by married couples.
 
President Tatar thanked those who are working to increase public awareness on thalassaemia and wished everybody success in the fight to stamp out the disease from the country.
