Mrs Tatar paid tribute to the successes of the “Target for Zero Waste-Tatlısu Pilot Project” and “Welcome Baby Memorial Forest Project”, and underlined the importance of working towards greater social responsibility and awareness on the matter.

The First Lady  stated that within the scope of Target Zero Waste-Tatlısu Pilot Project, a glass crushing machine, hundreds of containers, tens of dwarf elephant and Mediterranean monk seal, plastic bottle containers, training to local residents and contracts with three recycling companies were prepared, which has been entrusted to Tatlısu Municipality and people of Tatlısu which has had more than a 70 per cent success rate since its launch last October.  She added that with the second environmental project,  Welcome Baby Memorial Forest Project, a sapling has been planted for every baby born in the TRNC since April 1, 2020, and approximately 3,000 saplings were planted in February 2022, with the objective of planting 20,000 saplings.

First Lady Sibel Tatar also stated that there are more steps to be taken and much work to be done in order to protect the environment and raise awareness and that she is always ready to do her utmost in environmental issues by showing the necessary sensitivity in this regard.

An information meeting by Tatlısu Mayor Hayri Orçan regarding the progress reached in the Target Zero Waste- Tatlısu Pilot Project, which was initiated under the auspices of the TRNC Presidency and led by the First Lady Sibel Tatar, on the occasion of June 5 World Environment Day, carried out in cooperation with Tatlısu Municipality, was held.

At the information meeting, Tatlısu Mayor Hayri Orçan expressed his gratitude to the Presidency and all those who played a role in the implementation of the project under the leadership of First Lady Sibel Tatar, and stated that the people of the region responded very well and were showing great sensitivity to the project. She noted that the project has increased from a success rate of 70 per cent to 75 per cent, since October 2021.

The "Target for Zero Waste - Tatlısu Pilot Project" prepared by the TRNC Presidency Tourism and Environment Committee aims to explain the benefits of separate collection and recycling of waste to all our people and how to tackle environmental pollution, whilst also contributing to the economy by turning collected waste that has always been considered as garbage/rubbish for years back into raw material, by utilising technology.

Although the recycling of waste reduces air pollution by 74-94 per cent, water pollution by 35 per cent and water use by 45 per cent, separately collected waste ensures more successful recycling, quality of the recycled raw material, energy saving and decreases the amount of solid waste of the municipality.

Within the scope of the project, which was realised since October (2021),  plastic, metal, paper, glass, waste oil, waste batteries and medical waste are collected and sorted.

With the "Target Zero Waste - Tatlısu Pilot Project" realised for the first time in our country, all waste which for years was considered to be garbage is separated first and then converted into raw materials, thus contributing to the urbanism, tourism and economy of the region by preventing environmental pollution.
